While Labradoodles usually have slightly shorter hair than Goldendoodles, they still need regular grooming that usually includes some clipping. If you plan to groom your Labradoodle at home, we can help you choose the best clippers and blades for your dog. There are a number of clippers made for grooming ranging from trimmers to inexpensive clippers for thin coats to heavy duty clippers.  Labradoodles are sometimes described as having a “medium” coat but it tends to be curly or even wiry with many individuals. For that reason you will probably need professional quality clippers that are able to handle thicker coats. Some Labradoodles do have wavy, fleecy, or even silky coats but even if your dog has this kind of coat as a puppy, it can change by the time he’s an adult dog.

Clippers are available in corded and cordless styles; and in single-speed and multi-speed versions. We can help you choose which clippers will work best for you and your dog.

Clipper blades also come in a wide variety, allowing you to cut your dog’s coat very short or keep it longer. Labradoodles usually have more low-maintenance styles than Poodles or even Goldendoodles so you probably won’t need many different clipper blades but the way you cut your dog’s coat is always a matter of personal preference.

To groom your Labradoodle at home you will need good clippers, a few good clipper blades, and a good pair of thinning shears (scissors). Keep reading and we’ll show you the best hair clippers and blades for Labradoodles along with how to trim your dog’s coat.

The Labradoodle Coat

Since Labradoodles are a cross between a Poodle and a Labrador Retriever, the type of coat seen in the puppies, even after several generations, can be a guessing game. Labradoodles – even in the same litter – can have coats that are curly, straight, or wavy. Some dogs have fleecy coats. Some have woolly coats. Some dogs can have coats with patches of different kinds of hair.

Different kinds of coat can need different kinds of clipper blades. Or they can look better when they are cut in a different style. Don’t worry if you don’t know all of these things about your dog right now. It usually takes some time to figure out how to groom your dog to make him look his best – along with a little trial and error.

This kennel has some photos and good information about the various Labradoodle coat types. (This is not an endorsement of the kennel. We just like their Labradoodle coat information.)

Like Goldendoodles, Labradoodles have a reputation for being “hypoallergenic.” This isn’t exactly true.
Hybrid dogs like Labradoodles do shed to varying degrees, though you might not notice it with some dogs. They will also produce dander/skin flakes. Again, this can depend on the individual dog. Depending on the dog and the genetics, they can be better for people with dog allergies than dogs in general.

Top Labradoodle Clips and Cuts

Many Labradoodle owners complain that professional groomers make their dogs look like Poodles when they have their dogs groomed. If you do your own grooming you can avoid any Poodle hair cuts for your Labradoodle unless you like the Poodle look.

If your Labradoodle has a very curly coat then he would probably look good in many Poodle trims. Otherwise, if your Labradoodle has a coat that is wavy, fleecy, or straight, you may prefer a more casual look. Even many people who have Labradoodles with curly coats like to have their dogs groomed with a more relaxed style. As you can see, these are all very simple styles: long, short, and a Teddy Bear cut (a version of a puppy cut).

  • The Teddy Bear or puppy cut is popular with most curly-coated or wavy-coated puppies. They all look cute with this cut and it’s easy to do even if you’re grooming at home. The puppy is trimmed all over and the hair around the face is a little rounded and fringed. You can make this cut as long or as short as you prefer.
  • The short cut or Kennel Cut is low-maintenance and looks good on any dog with a curly or wavy coat. The coat is cut short all over. This kind of cut is especially good in the summer to keep your dog cool and comfortable. It also keeps your dog’s coat from picking up sticks and bugs and shows off his outline. You will need to trim this style frequently to keep it short.
  • The long cut is popular for Labradoodles. It leaves more coat on the body and many owners like the way it makes their dog look. If you choose this cut you should plan to brush your dog regularly to prevent mats and remove any dirt or debris from the coat. Most Labradoodles can wear their coat as long as 2 inches. Coats longer than that will take daily brushing and a lot of care to prevent mats and remove dirt and debris.

These are just some basic cuts for Labradoodles that you can easily do yourself once you learn to groom your dog. There are others. You’ll be amazed how creative people become once they start using clippers!

The first time your dog has a hair cut you may want to take him to a professional groomer. Try to wait and watch the groomer work on your dog if possible. Even if you can’t watch, your dog will have a good cut that you can use as an outline for your future efforts.

If your Labradoodle came from a breeder, don’t be shy about asking for some grooming tips. Most breeders are happy to give grooming advice or even show you how to groom your dog. You can also visit a dog show or a trade show for grooming tools to see how professionals use clippers on dogs. There are also dog grooming competitions that are fun to watch. You can learn a lot from watching these skilled professionals.

Different Types of Labradoodle Clippers

There are four basic kinds of clippers for grooming your Labradoodle.

  • Corded clippers. Corded clippers are used by professionals and people that show dogs. They have an electrical cord. They are good for people that groom a lot of dogs and need a sturdy clipper.
  • Cordless clippers. Cordless clippers are popular with some professional groomers and with some people that groom at home. They are usually lightweight and easy to hold so there is less hand fatigue. They usually run on batteries that can last up to two hours.
  • Corded/Cordless clippers. These clippers can operate with or without a cord. Use them with a cord while the battery is charging. You can use them cordless when the battery is charged. There are only a few clippers that are corded/cordless right now.
  • Pet trimmers. Trimmers can be a good choice if you need something to trim around your dog’s paws, face, and tail. They are less expensive than clippers but they are also less powerful. Some people like pet trimmers if they have a dog that is nervous around louder, more powerful clippers.

Key Components of a Top-Rated Set of Clippers for Labradoodles

If you’re planning to groom your Labradoodle at home, you will need good quality clippers. Dogs that have a curly or wiry coat, in particular, need clippers that have some power. Even dogs with wavy and fleecy coats can be quite thick.

Here are some things we look for in a top-rated set of clippers for Labradoodles:

  • Don’t buy cheap clippers. You will save money in the long-run if you buy good clippers from the start even if they cost a little more. Expect to spend about $100 (plus or minus) for good clippers.
  • Good clippers are powerful but they should be quiet with low vibration.
  • Good clippers should cut your Labradoodle’s coat easily even if he has a curly coat. If your clippers start having problems cutting the blade might need sharpening. Keeping your clippers clean and brushing out the fine hairs after using them will also keep them working better.
  • Since Labradoodles generally have thick coats, slower clippers will not work for them. You will need to purchase clippers that have a minimum of 3500 strokes per minutes (SPM).
  • Top-rated clippers should not heat up quickly. All clippers will get warm when you use them after a while but good clippers should not get hot after five minutes.
  • Top quality clippers should be comfortable in your hand. Some clippers today have an ergonomic design so they reduce hand fatigue.
  • You can use cordless clippers on your Labradoodle but keep in mind that these clippers usually need to be recharged after 60-90 minutes, depending on the model. (The longest battery life we have seen is two hours.) It can take longer than this to completely groom your Labradoodle from start to finish. If you groom your dog in several short sessions this won’t be a problem but if you like to groom your dog at one time you will do better with a corded clipper.
  • Top-rated clippers should be durable. Consider your clippers to be an investment. If you take care of them they should last for years. Good companies such as Andis and Oster have parts available if you need to have a repair made or replace a part.

Picking the Perfect Labradoodle Clipper Blade Size

Most professional clippers have detachable blades. They usually come with a standard #10 blade which is suitable for grooming many breeds. Because the clippers have “detachable” heads and the blade is detachable, you can easily change the blade and use a different blade. Blades come in lots of sizes so you can cut your dog’s hair as short as you like; or keep it longer. The higher the blade number, such as #30, the shorter the hair will be when you cut it. The lower the number, such as #3, the longer the hair. Blades typically cost $25-30.

If your blade becomes dull, you can have it sharpened by a professional, such as someone that sharpens scissors or knives. The clipper blade companies also sharpen blades if you send the blades back to them.

The detachable blades are interchangeable as long as they are made for similar clippers. For example, Andis and Oster detachable blades can be used on their various clippers.

If you’re wondering how much hair each blade will leave after the cut, here is a list of blades:

“F” is for a “finishing” blade which is for a smooth, blended cut. Some blades also come in a skip tooth version which is a good choice for getting through a matted coat (the #3, #4, #5, and #7). There are also clip-on combs if you would like to leave your Labradoodle’s coat longer.

The blades you use on your Labradoodle will depend on his coat type. Many Labradoodles can be groomed with a #3F, #5F, #7F, and #10 blade. These recommendations come from Labradoodle breeders.

Our 10 Step Labradoodle Grooming Guide

Labradoodles can be large dog (sometimes it’s a toss-up whether Labradoodles or Goldendoodles are bigger). They can also have a lot of coat. This means that it’s not always easy to groom them, especially when you’re first starting out with your clippers. It takes practice so don’t get discouraged.

Likewise, the dogs you normally see in grooming videos are used to being groomed. Not all dogs are so well-behaved. (I have a couple of little monkey-brat-dogs here at home.) Your Labradoodle will get used to being groom and having you use the clippers. It just takes a little time.

We can offer you some general tips on grooming your Labradoodle.

  1. Before you start grooming your dog try to gather all of your grooming tools in one place so you won’t have to hunt them while your dog is waiting. That usually leads to coming back and having to hunt for your dog.
  2. Clipping your Labradoodle is easier if his coat is clean. Give your Labradoodle a bath and brush him out 24-48 hours before you intend to use the clippers on him. Make sure that his coat is thoroughly dry. Drying the coat can take some time with a Labradoodle even if you use a blowdryer.
  3. Brush your Labradoodle’s coat out before you use the clippers on him. You can use a good pin brush or a slicker brush. Both of these brushes are easy to find. If your Labradoodle has any mats you can try to work them loose or gently work them away from your dog’s skin.
  4. All dogs need to stand still when someone is using the clippers on them. We recommend using a grooming table when you are using clippers on your dog, especially if you will be grooming your dog at home regularly.
  5. Since Labradoodles can be very active dogs, we recommend letting your dog play and exercise before you try to groom him. Taking the edge off his energy will help him stay calmer while you try to groom him.
  6. Ideally your Labradoodle will get used to the clippers from the time he’s a puppy so he’s not afraid of them. If he hasn’t seen them before, spend some time letting him get used to them. Let them run so he becomes used to the noise. Give him some treats when you turn them on. Keep lots of treats and cookies handy while you work on your dog. Make your first time trimming your dog with the clippers a short session. Reward your dog so it’s a good experience.
  7. Most people trim the area under their Labradoodle’s tail (the “sanitary” area), along with their paw pads. Trimming the arm pits can help avoid mats there. You may also want to trim your Labradoodle’s facial area, being very careful here. These are all sensitive areas so use caution. Trimming inside the ears can help prevent ear infections.
  8. From this point you can follow the outline for the clip or cut you have in mind. There are online sites as well as books that give advice on how to do specific cuts. Check your clipper blade often to make sure it’s not hot. You can switch out the blade with another one or use a coolant spray to help cool it off.
  9. Don’t worry if your first efforts at clipping your Labradoodle aren’t perfect. It takes some practice to learn to use clippers. Your dog’s coat will grow back and you can keep trying. You’ll learn quickly. Your dog doesn’t care if his haircut isn’t perfect. He only cares that you love him.
  10. If you or your dog start to become upset during a grooming session, take a time out. People and dogs can get frustrated – it happens. Your relationship is more important than getting the hair style right.

Here are some pictures (bottom of the page) of nicely groomed Labradoodles.

  • Can you use all clippers on all Labradoodles? No, not really. Some clippers will not have enough power to work properly on a Labradoodle coat. Otherwise, any good quality, professional grade set of clippers should work on your Labradoodle as long as they have enough power.  Dogs with coats like the Labradoodle usually need a minimum of 3500 strokes per minutes (SPM).
  • Can you use pet trimmers on a Labradoodle? You can use pet trimmers on your Labradoodle’s paws, paw pads, face, and in sensitive areas such as under the tail. However, pet trimmers do not have enough power to cut a Labradoodle’s coat.
  • What should you do if your Labradoodle’s coat is matted? If your Labradoodle’s coat is matted we recommend trying to gently work the mats loose with a comb without hurting your dog. If this doesn’t work, try to leave some space between the mat and your dog’s skin so you can gently ease the clippers under the mat and remove it. Clipper blade that is #3 or #7 are often recommended for removing mats from a coat. Try to blend in the part of the coat where the mat was with the rest of the coat so the hole won’t be noticeable.

Lots of people love Labradoodles for their sweet, gentle, fun personalities. They are also handsome dogs but their coats require some regular maintenance. With a little practice, you can learn to groom your Labradoodle at home. Invest in a set of good clippers and a few blades and you can keep your dog looking great!
