Even though they have a reputation for being “hypoallergenic,” Goldendoodles need regular grooming and that usually includes some clipping. If you are thinking about grooming your Goldendoodle at home, we can help you choose the best clippers and blades for your dog. There are a variety of clippers made to groom dogs but Goldendoodles can have a harsh or curly coat so they generally require professional-grade clippers. You can choose from corded, cordless, single-speed and multi-speed clippers. There are also pet trimmers that are good to use around the paws and face.

We can also help you select the right clipper blades to use for the kind of cut you want to give your Goldendoodle. Unlike Poodles which can sometimes wear outrageous hair styles, most Goldendoodle styles are rather casual and low-maintenance. They are also easy to do once you learn to use the clippers. All you will basically need is a good set of clippers, a few good clipper blades, and perhaps a pair of grooming shears (scissors). We can show you the best hair clippers and blades for Goldendoodles, along with some popular and easy styles for the breed.

The Goldendoodle Coat

Goldendoodles are often advertised as “hypoallergenic” or non-shedding dogs but no dogs are completely hypoallergenic.
All dogs produce some dander. Even non-shedding dogs shed a little. Many Goldendoodles are at the low end of this spectrum so you may not notice any dander they produce; and the little hair they shed tends to get caught up in their coat and curls.

The size of your Goldendoodle shouldn’t be an issue when you are grooming him or choosing a set of clippers. However, Goldendoodles can have several different types of coat. This is simply a matter of genetics. Puppies in the same litter can have different coat types. Goldendoodles can have curly, wavy, or straight coats. Some even have flat coats with smooth faces like Golden Retrievers, though this is not what breeders are trying to produce. The loose wavy/shaggy coats are most common among Goldendoodles. Wavy/shaggy and straight coats are considered easier to maintain. Curly coats usually require more maintenance and regular brushing to avoid mats. You need to brush often or keep this kind of coat short so it won’t tangle.

As with Poodles, many Goldendoodles can have hair that keeps growing … and growing. Poodles have coat that can grow so long that it can be corded into dreadlocks. We haven’t seen a Rastafarian Goldendoodle but some of them do have coats that tend to grow several inches longer than other dogs. Both Poodles and Golden Retrievers have genes for long coats so your Goldendoodle comes by this tendency naturally. You may not notice so much if you have a dog with curly or wavy coat since these textures keep the coat drawn up, but when the coat is wet you’ll see just how long the coat is. This is another reason why keeping your Goldendoodle’s hair trimmed is a good idea. Regular haircuts will keep the hair from becoming straggly and prevent it from looking unkempt.

You can find more information about Goldendoodle coats on the web site for this association.

Top Goldendoodle Clips and Cuts

Many of the styles that are appropriate for Poodles also look good on Goldendoodles. Okay, not the show ring cuts, but some of the more relaxed, casual styles. Here are some easy styles that you can consider for your Goldendoodle. You can learn to do all of these cuts at home.

The Puppy Cut (also called the Teddy Bear cut) is a universally popular cut that’s used for many puppies and fluffy little dogs, including Goldendoodle puppies. It’s cute and easy to do. With this style the puppy or dog is trimmed all over in a trim that is an even length. There are nice layers of hair left along the dog’s sides, legs, and paws. The hair around the dog’s face is rounded and fringed. This style minimizes mats and tangles. The face, ears, and tail can be cut to a slightly different length form the body so they are extra cute and stand out. There is no definite length for a puppy cut so it’s up to you have long or short you want to make it.

The Kennel Cut is short and easy to care for. It looks good on a Goldendoodle or any active dog with a wavy or curly coat. The coat is clipped short all over. This cut keeps your dog cool and comfortable, especially in the summer. You don’t have to brush much in between haircuts. It also keeps your dog from picking up sticks and debris in his coat. It also shows off your dog’s beautiful outline.

The Lamb Cut is also popular for Goldendoodles. This cut leaves more coat on your dog but it is shaped to show your dog’s outline. The coat is blended on the legs to meet the body. It’s a popular Poodle hairstyle that looks good on Goldendoodles.

This is only a sampling of some of the most popular Goldendoodle cuts. People tend to get very creative when they have clippers in their hands. Once you learn how to groom your Goldendoodle you can modify any of these basic styles to suit your dog so don’t be afraid to experiment.

For your dog’s first haircut you might want to take him to a professional groomer. See if you can wait and watch the groomer groom your dog. Even if you can’t watch, your dog will have a good basic haircut that will give you an outline for the future when you start using the clippers yourself.

If you got your dog from a breeder, ask for some tips about grooming him. Most breeders are happy to give advice about grooming (or anything else). You can also visit a dog show or a trade show for grooming products to see how professionals use clippers on dogs. You can learn a lot from these sources.

Different Types of Goldendoodle Clippers

There are four basic kinds of clippers for grooming your Goldendoodle.

  • Corded clippers. Corded clippers are used by professionals and people that show dogs. They have an electrical cord. They are good for people that groom a lot of dogs and need a sturdy clipper.
  • Cordless clippers. Cordless clippers are popular with some professional groomers and with some people that groom at home. They are usually lightweight and easy to hold so there is less hand fatigue. They usually run on batteries that can last up to two hours.
  • Corded/Cordless clippers. These clippers can operate with or without a cord. Use them with a cord while the battery is charging. You can use them cordless when the battery is charged. There are only a few clippers that are corded/cordless.
  • Pet trimmers. Trimmers can be a good choice if you need something to trim around your dog’s paws, face, and tail. They are less expensive than clippers but they are also less powerful.

Key Components of a Top-Rated Set of Clippers for Goldendoodles

If you’re planning to groom your Goldendoodle at home, you will need good quality clippers. If your dog has a curly coat, in particular, you will need some clippers with some power. Even Goldendoodles with a wavy or straight coat usually need clippers that can motor through the hair since these coats can be thick.

Here are some things we look for in a top-rated set of clippers for Goldendoodles:

  • Don’t buy cheap clippers. You will save money in the long-run if you buy good clippers from the start even if they cost a little more. Expect to spend about $100 (plus or minus) for good clippers.
  • Good clippers are powerful but they should be relatively quiet with low vibration.
  • Good clippers should cut your Goldendoodle’s coat easily even if he has thick curls. If your clippers start having problems cutting it could be time to have your blade sharpened. Keeping your clippers clean and brushing out the fine hairs after using them will also keep them working better.
  • Since Goldendoodles generally have thick coats, slower clippers will not work for them. You will need to purchase clippers that have a minimum of 3500 strokes per minutes (SPM).
  • Top-rated clippers should not heat up quickly. All clippers will get warm when you use them after a while but good clippers should not get hot after five minutes.
  • Top quality clippers should be comfortable in your hand. Some clippers today have an ergonomic design so they reduce hand fatigue.
  • You can use cordless clippers on your Goldendoodle but keep in mind that these clippers usually need to be recharged in 60-120 minutes, depending on the model. It can take longer than this to completely groom your Goldendoodle. If you groom your dog in several short sessions this won’t be a problem but if you like to groom your dog at one time you will do better with a corded clipper.
  • Top-rated clippers should be durable. Consider your clippers to be an investment. If you take care of them they should last for years. Good companies such as Andis and Oster have parts available if you need to have a repair made or replace a part.

Picking the Perfect Goldendoodle Clipper Blade Size

Most clippers have detachable blades. Most models come with a standard #10 blade which is good for grooming many different breeds. But you can easily remove or “detach” the blade from the clippers and replace it with any other blade that you purchase. Blades come in all sizes so you can cut your dog’s hair as short as you want – or keep it longer. The higher the blade number, such as #30, the shorter the hair will be when you cut it. The lower the number, such as #3, the longer the hair.

Here are some popular Goldendoodle styles and the blades to use:

Kennel Trim

  • Matted Coat – 7F
  • Face, Feet, & Base of Tail – 10 or 15
  • Body & Legs – 5, 4, 3
  • Top Knot & Tailpiece – Scissors

Lamb Trim

  • Face, Feet, & Base of Tail – 10 or 15
  • Body – 5, 4, 3
  • Legs – 30 with ¾” or 1″ Comb
  • Top Knot & Tailpiece – Scissors

Summer Trim – Bikini Trim

  • Face, Feet, & Base of Tail – 10 or 15
  • Body & Legs – 7F or 5F
  • Pom-poms, Top Knot & Tail Pom – Scissors
  • Stomach – 10

If you’re wondering how much hair each blade will leave after the cut, here is a list of blades:

Blades

“F” is for a “finishing” blade which is for a smooth, blended cut. Some blades also come in a skip tooth version which is a good choice for getting through a matted coat (the #3, #4, #5, and #7). There are also clip-on combs if you would like to leave your Goldendoodle’s coat longer.

Andis and Oster both make excellent blades. They can be used interchangeably in most clippers, regardless of the manufacturer.

Our 10 Step Goldendoodle Grooming Guide

We can offer you some general tips on grooming your Goldendoodle.

  1. Before you start grooming your dog try to gather all of your grooming tools in one place so you won’t have to hunt them while your dog is waiting. That usually leads to coming back and having to hunt for your dog.
  2. Clipping any dog is easier if his coat is clean. This is also true for Goldendoodles. Give your Goldendoodle a bath and brush him out 24-48 hours before you intend to use the clippers on him. Make sure that his coat is thoroughly dry. Drying the coat can take some time with a Goldendoodle even if you use a blowdryer.
  3. Brush your Goldendoodle’s coat out before you use the clippers on him. You can use a good pin brush or a slicker brush. Both of these brushes are easy to find. If your Goldendoodle has any mats you can try to work them loose or gently work them away from your dog’s skin.
  4. All dogs need to stand still when someone is using the clippers on them so they aren’t accidentally cut. It’s easy to give a dog a mohawk by mistake if he’s wiggling. We recommend using a grooming table when you are using clippers on your dog, especially if you will be grooming your dog at home regularly.
  5. Since Goldendoodles can be very active dogs, we recommend letting your dog play and exercise before you try to groom him. Taking the edge off his energy will help him stay calmer while you try to groom him.
  6. Ideally your Goldendoodle will get used to the clippers from the time he’s a puppy so he’s not afraid of them. If he hasn’t seen them before, spend some time letting him get used to them. Let them run so he becomes accustomed to the noise. Give him some treats when you turn them on. Keep lots of treats and cookies handy while you work on your dog. Make your first time trimming your dog with the clippers a short session. Reward your dog so it’s a good experience.
  7. Most people trim the area under their Goldendoodle’s tail (the “sanitary” area), along with their paw pads. Trimming the arm pits can help avoid mats there. You may also want to trim your Goldendoodle’s facial area, being very careful here. These are all sensitive areas so use caution.
  8. From this point you can follow the outline for the clip or cut you have in mind. There are online sites as well as books that give advice on how to do specific cuts. You will probably need some grooming scissors to help shape the look you want. Check your clipper blade often to make sure it’s not hot. You can switch out the blade with another one to let it cool off or use a coolant spray to help cool it off.
  9. Don’t worry if your first efforts at clipping your Goldendoodle aren’t perfect. It takes some practice to learn to use clippers. Your dog’s coat will grow back and you can keep trying. You’ll learn quickly. Your dog really really does not care if his haircut isn’t perfect. He only cares that you cuddle him.
  10. If you or your dog start to become upset during a grooming session, take a time out. People and dogs can get frustrated – it happens. Your relationship is more important than getting the hair style right.

FAQ

  • Can you use all clippers on all Goldendoodles? Since Goldendoodles often have very thick and/or curly hair, it’s recommended that you use more powerful clippers to groom them. Look for clippers that have at least 3500 strokes per minute (SPM). Slower clippers probably won’t be able to cut through their thick coat. You can use cordless clippers on a Goldendoodle is they have enough power. However, keep in mind that cordless clippers have to be recharged every 60-120 minutes. It usually takes longer than this to completely groom a Goldendoodle. If you groom your dog in short sessions this won’t be a problem. However, if you like to groom your dog all at one time, you are probably better off with a corded clipper.
  • Can you use pet trimmers on a Goldendoodle? You can use pet trimmers to work on a Goldendoodle’s paws, paw pads, face, under the tail, and other sensitive areas. However, pet trimmers are not powerful enough to use as clippers to cut a Goldendoodle’s coat.
  • What should you do if your Goldendoodle’s coat is matted? If your Goldendoodle’s coat is matted you should try to gently work the mats loose with comb without hurting your dog. If this doesn’t work, try to leave some space between the mat and your dog’s skin so you can slip the clippers under the mat. You can use a #3 or #7 blade on your clippers to remove the mat. Try to blend the patch in with the rest of his coat.

Conclusion

Since many Goldendoodles are big dogs and they can have a lot of coat, it’s not always easy to groom them at home, especially when you are just learning to use your clippers. It takes some practice. Don’t get discouraged. Both you and your dog will get the hang of things. You’ll find that grooming your Goldendoodle gets faster and easier as you do more grooming. And your dog will look great!
