Our 10 Step Labradoodle Grooming Guide

Labradoodles can be large dog (sometimes it’s a toss-up whether Labradoodles or Goldendoodles are bigger). They can also have a lot of coat. This means that it’s not always easy to groom them, especially when you’re first starting out with your clippers. It takes practice so don’t get discouraged.

Likewise, the dogs you normally see in grooming videos are used to being groomed. Not all dogs are so well-behaved. (I have a couple of little monkey-brat-dogs here at home.) Your Labradoodle will get used to being groom and having you use the clippers. It just takes a little time.

We can offer you some general tips on grooming your Labradoodle.

1. Before you start grooming your dog try to gather all of your grooming tools in one place so you won’t have to hunt them while your dog is waiting. That usually leads to coming back and having to hunt for your dog.
2. Clipping your Labradoodle is easier if his coat is clean. Give your Labradoodle a bath and brush him out 24-48 hours before you intend to use the clippers on him. Make sure that his coat is thoroughly dry. Drying the coat can take some time with a Labradoodle even if you use a blowdryer.
3. Brush your Labradoodle’s coat out before you use the clippers on him. You can use a good pin brush or a slicker brush. Both of these brushes are easy to find. If your Labradoodle has any mats you can try to work them loose or gently work them away from your dog’s skin.
4. All dogs need to stand still when someone is using the clippers on them. We recommend using a grooming table when you are using clippers on your dog, especially if you will be grooming your dog at home regularly.
5. Since Labradoodles can be very active dogs, we recommend letting your dog play and exercise before you try to groom him. Taking the edge off his energy will help him stay calmer while you try to groom him.
6. Ideally your Labradoodle will get used to the clippers from the time he’s a puppy so he’s not afraid of them. If he hasn’t seen them before, spend some time letting him get used to them. Let them run so he becomes used to the noise. Give him some treats when you turn them on. Keep lots of treats and cookies handy while you work on your dog. Make your first time trimming your dog with the clippers a short session. Reward your dog so it’s a good experience.
7. Most people trim the area under their Labradoodle’s tail (the “sanitary” area), along with their paw pads. Trimming the arm pits can help avoid mats there.
